I have good parents who I love dearly, however, they both had strict victorian upbringings, which they,in turn, applied to the upbringing of their own children. So they were often uncomfortable with displays of affection,my dad used to kiss me goodnight but once I reached my teens that stopped.Cuddling was practically unheard of,a pat on the shoulder was as close as it got.As for swearing, well that was DEFINITELY unheard of.
I now have 2 sons and 4 daughters of my own and since they were born I have always cuddled them, told them how much I love them and how proud they make me.I am very open with them so they know they can come to me with any problems or discuss anything that may be on their minds.
I'm not bothered by the swearing either, afterall,it's only a way of expressing oneself in the heat of the moment..we all do it!
I have always given them the freedom to develop their own personalities and learn from mistakes.
In turn they have grown into wonderful, respectful, caring and very loving adults who make my heart swell with so much pride.

I wouldn't emotionally, physically, and psychologically abuse them. If I ever had a kid I wouldn't jump to conclusions and automatically assume he/she did something wrong when they didn't.

My mom and dad always told me that i cant do certain things because i was a girl. ANd i got to watch my brothers do whatever they wanted. I dont do that to my daughter. OF course, there are restrictions to whatever my kids do but i will not tell my daughter that she cant do something because she is a girl!! That *****!!!!!!!

What wouldn't I do differently would be an easier question to answer.

1. Put them first at all times
2. Be there for them as a friend and a parent
3. Try to listen more than lecture
4. Be openminded about the fads and stages they go thru
5. Be supportive of any and all ideas they have that dont involve violence or illegal activity
6. Not involve them in my financial hardships
7. Never leave without telling them I love them
8. Be trusting until they give me a reason not to
9. Have the hard conversations with them, (even the ones that make me blush)
10. MOST IMPORTANT... Love them until they can't stand it

I am making sure that my kids know every day that I am proud of them, I want them to be in my life, and that they have a family tht cares even when they feel like they do not deserve it. I also work hard to let them know exactly what I expect for respect and public behavior.

These were things my parents did not always let me know.
